Erik and Zane return with the Pure Mood Podcast #9! The show begins with a triple threat of movie discussion. First, Zane discusses GANGSTER SQUAD, which he views as a mediocre action movie held up by a fantastic ensemble cast. Erik offers his thoughts on BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, a documentary on American photographer Gregory Crewdson. Then, the boys saw THIS IS 40 together, and give a joint review on a film Erik sees as fragile, human and hilarious, and Zane sees as wieldy, slow-paced and too long. Then, it’s a discussion on comics news – are we moving away from ‘writing for the trade’, and back towards monthly, serial comics? What do we think of DC replacing creative talent after soliciting them on titles, or the controversy surrounding Gail Simone? Then, Erik reads a bunch of the earliest AQUAMAN stories. A lot of them are forgettable and bland, but moments of greatness seep through the cracks, especially the character of Aqualad, and Aquaman’s relationship with his mother. All this and more!
Who wants a review on a game nearly a decade old? We know it’s you! Zane gives his thoughts on KANE & LYNCH, developed by one of his all time favourite game studios. The boys discuss the infamous Gamespot controversy surrounding the title, as well as the action focused gameplay and wonderful voice acting. But the two agree – a game about working with a schizophrenic partner could be much more unique.
DEAD PENGUIN CLUB
In our regular literary feature, Erik, self-professed BLUE DEVIL fan, attempts to use his meager intellect to review a book in the PENGUIN CLASSICS line. This time around, we’ve got a look at M R James’ Count Magus & Other Stories a collection of gothic horror stories. The stories offer an interesting personal view of the world James was living in – a world where Darwin’s theories were just being introduced to a world grasping to traditional religious values. They’re also spooky, full of twists and drama, and a lot of fun!
THE PURE MOOD MAIL BAG
The mail bag’s a little light this week, so Erik and Zane discuss a recent post on Si Spurrier’s tumblr that got the boys thinking. How important is continuity? Does it hold readers back? Does it hold creators back? A fascinating discussion for any superhero fanboy!
